Good running shoes lay the groundwork for a comfortable and seamless run. They can also make the difference between a successful one and not. So, when you find the right pair, the one that makes you feel like you're running (ahem, gliding) on clouds, you immediately add-to-cart.
Say hello to On, the Swiss-engineered running shoe brand with next-gen tech making every step effortless, one cloud at a time.
On running shoes have boomed in popularity in recent years, captivating both casual and seasoned runners with their innovative design and performance-driven technology, and it's easy to see why.
A distinctive feature is the individual cloud-like pods that compress when you run, offering a responsive and cushioned ride that adapts your gait with each step.
But it's not just the cutting-edge tech that has given the brand a step forward in the running shoe market – it's their commitment to combining style with performance. With minimalist (and maximalist) designs and bold colourways, On shoes make a statement on the track, trail, and streets.
For some expert insight, we spoke with On Technical Representative Lead, Lucy Cleggett, to find out who should be wearing (and running in) On and how to find your On running shoe.
When and where was On founded?
Founded in 2010, in Switzerland, 3 friends embarked on a mission to revolutionise the footwear industry and to ignite the human spirit through movement, tells Lucy.
"14 years on, On has maintained a leading brand in footwear innovation and technology, with the original goals at the backbone of the creation behind On performance running shoes: to reduce the impact of your landing."
"As of 2023, On is now globally recognised as one of the fastest-growing sportswear brands of its time."
What might attract someone to On footwear?
What sets On apart from the rest is their sleek appearance and unique midsole foam construction, named CloudTec, embedded within the soles of their shoes.
"Cloudtec reduces the impact of the runner's landing by compressing the Cloud elements both vertically and horizontally, ultimately reducing shearing forces such as that jarring sensation you get from hard landings," says Lucy.
"This foam cushioning construction also provides an explosive take-off as the foam stiffens while decompressing in the toe-off stage of running/walking."
Soft landings and fast take-offs have proven Cloudtec to be an efficient and energy-saving foam construction.
Fun Fact? Lucy says the original On prototypes consisted of Cloudtec made from a garden hose!
And it's not just the revolutionary Cloudtec that has sparked interest among runners, many of the On models also contain a speedboard made from an injected nylon or thermoplastic material which helps add structure and propulsion to the shoe.
"It's these features that really help differentiate us from other brands," says Lucy.
Who are On running shoes good for?
On shoes are great for all types of runners, from the dedicated runner to the beginner runner, says Lucy.
Do they suit all foot types? Because running shoes aren't one-size-fits-all, Lucy explains this is something that is case by case but adds that On has a variety of shapes and sizes available to suit most foot types.
How do you find your On running shoe?
Whether you're looking for a shoe for your next walk, marathon or hill sprint, On has you covered.
For Long Runs
"As with most shoes, this is slightly dependent on the person's foot type and the experience they're after," says Lucy.
"However, the best for a more neutral foot is Cloudstratus 2 and Cloudmonster 2," adding, "Both have high levels of cushioning and a speedboard to help you push on as you fatigue."
If you're after a little bit more stability underfoot then Lucy recommends testing out the Cloudrunner 2. "With its high level of ground contact and cushioned feel, the Cloudrunner 2 is perfect for giving you more confidence," she says.
For Tempo Runs
For those looking to inject a little pace, Lucy recommends the Cloudmonster 2. "With its spoon-shaped speedboard and large Cloudtec elements it makes for a bouncy, energetic ride where you can shift through the gears."
For Speed Days
"When speed is involved then the Cloudflow is probably the go-to On," says Lucy. "With its more aggressive speedboard and smaller Cloudtec units, it allows for a responsive feel that quickly gets you on and off the ground."
"This combined with its high-tech upper means it's also super lightweight," she says. "The Cloudflow is good for speed reps, all the way to threshold work."
"While lacking for that longer sustained speed effort it can be great for hill reps and shorter intervals due to its lightweight and responsive feel."
Are On shoes suitable for walking and everyday wear?
For those wanting to know if they can wear their On's for a morning walk to brunch, you're in luck. "A key feature of all On shoes is comfort and performance," says Lucy.
"Any model from our Lifestyle or Travel range is great for everyday wear."
If you're walking on the road or paved surfaces, Lucy recommends the Cloud 5 and Cloud X range. Or if you're after a little more support and cushioning the Cloudrunner 2 or Cloudflyer 4 is your best bet.
What percentage of recycled/sustainable materials does On use?
Leaving a minimal carbon footprint on Earth has been a goal of On's since before 2010. So, each season, the recycled content in every On product is increasing, explains Lucy.
"For this SS24 season, the key On footwear products in Oceania are sitting at an average of 30% total recycled content, and an astonishing 85% average recycled polyester across all footwear products."
And Apparel and Accessory lines are also following suit. "New sustainability initiatives are constantly being explored within On's Innovation Team, with more to roll out in future seasons," she says.
Just another great reason why we love On.
