Australia has always been a sporting nation. It's in our blood to get out there and play whether it's a game of backyard cricket or an international cricket Test, but when you add diversity into the mix - Australia becomes a very formidable team on any field…or backyard for that matter.
When athletes from different backgrounds can compete and succeed, it sends a powerful message that anyone can achieve their dreams. This inclusiveness helps to build confidence and self-esteem in athletes and encourages them to strive for excellence.
LGBTQIA+ inclusion in sport is so important. It is a celebration of diversity and a reminder that everyone deserves to be accepted and loved for who they are. It's about coming together to support each other and to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.
The Australian sporting landscape has come a long way in terms of diversity, but there is still much work to be done. This includes encouraging more women and people from diverse cultural backgrounds to get involved in sport, as well as addressing the issues of racism, sexism and homophobia that still exist within the industry.
With Pride Month approaching this year there has never been a better time to show your true colours. Let everyone know how proud you are to be part of the amazing LGBTQIA+ community.
It's time for everyone - athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators - to come together and create an inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy their favourite sports without fear of discrimination or prejudice. Let's continue to make Australian sport a place where everyone feels welcome.
Most of all, let's all celebrate Pride Month together.
